Comcast has released a new program available to low income families that would give them high speed internet access for just under $10 a month.
This program was created because the FCC required that Comcast make broadband available to 400,000 poor households for less than $10 per month, otherwise Comcast wouldn’t have been allowed to acquire NBC earlier this year.
Families can get broadband for $9.95 and a netbook-like computer for $149.99 if they meet the following criteria.
- Must live in one of the 39 states that Comcast currently serves.
- Must have at least one child enrolled in a free lunch program through the National School Lunch Program.
- Must not have been subscribed to Comcast Internet service in the last 90 days.
- Can’t have overdue Comcast bills or unreturned equipment.
The broadband speed offered is up to 1.5Mbps down and 384Kbps up. This package which is called Internet Essentials will be available at the start of this school year and will run for three full school years. Anyone who signs up will not see a price increase during this time and they also will not have to pay for activation or installation. If you are interested in getting this internet package you can call Comcast today at 1-855-8-INTERNET.

My question is, can you pay a little extra for an increase in speed?
I doubt you will be able to pay extra for a speed increase. It is Comcast after all.
I’m hearing different things about the netbook purchase. Some are saying that you are given a voucher for $150 towards the purchase of a computer, and the others, such as yourself are saying you have the option of buying one for $150. Just looking for some clarification.
I know that NPR said you would get $150 voucher and I’d imagine others have said that too. However on the internet essentials website it says that you can buy the computer for $150 plus tax.

I dont know why people who already have had comcast who still are in the luch program dont qualify!! It’s not right!! due to recent layoff I qualify for the free luch program for my kids. I just think it is sooooo wrong to offer something like this just to new internet users!! What about the people who would otherwise qualify for the program, but have been comcast cosutmers for over 7 years!!!! I guess it does not matter about them, cuz it just all about money, not helping at all!!!
I’m sure Comcast is just assuming since you could afford their ridiculous prices for the last 7 years they don’t need to offer it to you. It’s complete BS because you should qualify for it.
I agree also, i called about it and yes i am a comcast customer….you can’t punish the kids for their parents having services…don’t offer something you can’t fully give to the children. and i was told to cancel my services for 90days which means 3 months without my kids having to look up stuff for work just to get the 9.99 a month….not worth it
is this program order in virginia?
If Comcast is in your area, yes.
This sounds like a good program, but most kids on the free lunch program are there because they parents can’t afford to pay, so I’m not undderstanding the $10 dollar fee, Comcast you need rethink this program what about giving them a 6 months plan for free of internet only and than charge the $10 dollar fee and I know that this company can afford to give back.
It is Comcast though, they have to make a killing at everything they do.
Exactly what Meghan Haas said, because, Im now paying for internet service that I am not using because I no longer have a computer in the house, the mere fact that Im already paying for the services , which is way more than $10 a month, they should be more than willing to give me the voucher towards a new computer…smh!!
where do i sign up for it?
don’t be so exited, this promotion is a big LIE
. I have been waiting for the application for 2 months. When you call to request the application, they say that you have to wait 10 days. If the app doesn’t come (it never comes), you can request another one and wait 10 more days, and so on…
This is crazy!!! Whats next gasoline coupons? Free i phones? Go to the library and use the internet for free. Contrary to what you may think no one owes you a damn thing!!!
Ok I haven’t heard anyone say they are OWED this although greedy corporate america does owe americans
Not all kids can easily get to the library. Don’t EVEn bring up gasoline whose companies do practically zippo for the BILLIONS in profits and tax write-offs. OPEN YOUR EYES
This own won’t work though you gt a voucher towards a laptop not a laptop and the things probably has 2 gb total of memory. practically useless anyway when kids have any projects requiring graphics. I know a SPED kid that has need a laptop IN school for the past 4 years. PArents can’t afford that – forget chicago some of their kids don’t even have books and many have CTU teachers that don’t give a crap if they if they do hw or not only if they can pass the stupid STRESS tests they give every year. UGH another political BS mess
